Best Practice Group

The Best Practice Group guidelines are intended to help the clinician provide the most effective and appropriate prescription.

These guidelines have now been published to make them available to the international prosthetic community. Find out more.

They are used to advise patients of the advantages and disadvantages of their treatment, and help meeting the requirements of patient consent. They give the information clinicians need to evaluate the prescriptive options available as well as providing clinical evidence to support the decisions.

Each guideline has been developed from a critical appraisal of available literature and a consensus of clinical opinion derived from an adaptation of the Delphi technique primarily from Prosthetists within RSLSteeper, but also some prosthetic Rehabilitation Consultants. It is updated as new literature and audit demand. Details of this process for each guideline are held in a central reference file that is available on request.

The guidelines are categorised according to level of amputation and colour coded for quick reference. For each level there are guidelines covering choice of socket prescription, casting method and prosthetic devices.
The Best Practice Group are also responsible for the production of professional practice guidelines where none exist already through the professional bodies (Health Professions Council & BAPO).
